From Ready to Rambunctious Monday...

As our team debriefed after supper this evening, all of us shared our joy and delight in having had a great start to our week of Day Camp in Criuleni Moldova.

Our team was picked up at 8:40 for our trip to Criuleni this morning.  In about 45 minutes as we turned onto the street where the home is which hosts our camp, I caught a brief glimpse through the gate of a large group of children already racing around the grassy play area.  No one had been able to predict what the response would be to plans for this camp.  It was expected that we could have about 55-60 children attend.  We had 54 today - a nice size for the size of our team and the space available.  But I'm not certain how anyone could get an accurate count as these children had the ability to be in more than one place at a time it seemed.

We got ourselves fairly well organized and started our opening large group time just after 10 AM.  We introduced our team, a general plan for the week, had some singing, Mark Clemons shared his testimony and the translators read the scripture portion for the lesson which included some translators and helpers dressed in costume acting the scenes being read from Genesis 37.
Joseph being sent to find his brothers...
The kids loved the action which was dramatically portrayed just outside the tent where all the children were seated on tarps on the ground.  I was thoroughly impressed with their attention.

From the large group we moved to 6 small groups at various locations around the grounds.  Those groups made nametags, presented a lesson, introduced a memory verse and had fun together.

Lunch for the total group of 84 people was picnic style and plenty filling and tasty.

During the afternoon, we went through a 3 session rotation of crafts, recreation and a variable 3rd option.  That's where we get the descriptive word "rambunctious",  Webster gives the definition as:
rambunctious:  : uncontrolled in a way that is playful or full of energy
I used the word with my translator and she didn't know its meaning.  The next 2 I talked to did not know that word either but it fit the action of the afternoon.  Nobody got hurt so we think it was quite fun and successful!

Our large group wrap up revealed continued excitement of all children for the day.  They  promised to invite others and return for tomorrow.  With sleep tonight, our team expects to be ready to return.

We introduced John 3:16 this morning as a theme verse for the week and started to memorize it.  We asked how many of the children already knew the verse and only one child raised a hand.  That made me realize the value of our plans to include Bible memory in order to leave God's word in their hearts.

We are very grateful for a beautiful day weather-wise, for lots of children - some new to the work done in this village, for joy, health and the privilege of sharing God's story.

Last piece of luggage has still not arrived.  Need to call Delta Airlines and find out what is the delay.

Enjoy the photos...  and keep us in your prayers - so needed.

A gal we sponsored until her graduation joined us today and will be around all week as a helper...

1. Moldova Mission Trip 2015...

In two weeks, our bags will be packed, our preparation will end and our travel will begin.  Here is a message I sent to family and friends today.

Dear Folks,
In exactly 2 weeks from today, John and I will be leaving for Chisinau, Moldova for our 10th summer trip there as part of a Mission Team from our Kerrville, TX church in partnership with CERI, Children’s Emergency Relief, International.  There will be 7 members for this team.  We will arrive in Moldova on June 20th.  We will leave San Antonio early on June 19th.  Our flights will take us through Atlanta, Paris, Kiev and into Chisinau, Moldova.  Return on July 3rd will have the same routing.

John and a group of his boys from a past trip.
We will be doing much the same thing as we have done in the past but we’ll be doing it at a different place.  In the past we have worked at a summer camp which was the summer home for about 150 children from an orphanage.  But over the past few years, Moldova has been moving children from orphanages into homes with family members or into foster care.  The camp is now being used for children no longer part of CERI’s work in Moldova.
The girl we sponsor now.
CERI continues to be committed to working in Moldova with the poorest, neediest children and feels that those children are living in villages.  A community center has been identified which is being used to host some activities for children in an area called Criuleni – about 30 minutes outside of Chisinau, the capitol of Moldova.  Our team will stay in a Team House as we have done in the past and will go to Criuleni daily where we will conduct lessons and activities for children ages 7-15 from 10am – 3pm each day.  We plan to share Biblical truth and hope through the life of Joseph, son of Jacob, who was a trustworthy, godly man of faithfulness, integrity, purity and perhaps most importantly, a man who was able to forgive the wrongs of the past which were inflicted on him by jealous, hateful brothers.  What man had planned for evil, God planned for good.

Preparation for this trip is well underway but we would love to have you join us in prayer.  I will list some requests but ask you to lift our team to the Lord as you feel led.

The team members are:

1.       Deanna Caraway, Kerrville, TX
2.       Mark Clemons, Kerrville, TX
3.       Lesley Toops, Dallas, TX
4.       James Worden, Detroit, MI
5.       John C. Worden, Kerrville, TX
6.       Linda Worden, Kerrville, TX
7.       Sarah Worden, San Antonio, TX

Prayer Requests:
1.       Completion of preparation and packing before we leave.
2.       Safety and rest as we travel.
3.       Truthful, helpful, winsome sharing of God’s message through our words and actions.
4.       Health and strength for our God prepared opportunities.
5.       Team comradery.
6.       Favor with airlines so that checked bags will be accepted without a charge.
7.       Life changing response to things God shows our team and those we meet during this trip.
We are grateful for this opportunity and will try to update the blog each day as time, energy and wi-fi service allow.

With His Hope and Help,
Linda L. Worden

Daniel... "I Stood Up Trembling" continues...

The first part of my thoughts based on these words spoken by the Old Testament prophet, Daniel - "I stood up trembling" -  are part of a previous blogpost. In that post, I share Daniel's response to words of Jesus spoken to him in a vision.  In that writing, I pointed out that even a "highly esteemed," godly prophet of God, can experience fear and trembling.

Christmastime 2014
Today I share some thoughts from a recent incident in the life of one of my son's.  He lives in MI and loves winter - which makes a definite statement there each year.  This son loves cold weather and especially the sports which come with ice and snow.  He and his 4 year old son are often out on a hockey rink to celebrate one of the fun options they love during the winter.
1st day of hockey practice for 4 year olds...  so excited!
Another winter option our son loves is snowboarding.  Last weekend, he and many of his community of friends from his block in Detroit, headed north for their annual 3-day ski weekend.  His son stayed with friends so Dad could truly enjoy time on the slopes.
But the excitement and joy of the slopes came to an abrupt, bone chilling end as our son somehow flipped backward and airborne in the direction of the corner of a platform!!!  His left back slammed into the corner protrusion of that platform.  The result? - fractured ribs, a broken left thumb, numbing pain and an ambulance ride to the nearest hospital an hour away!

We would learn of this accident from our other son who had "happened" to call his brother only to have a friend take the call and report that brother was in the emergency room having X-rays and a CT scan.  That son called us and we began to call close prayer warriors, knowing only that ribs had been broken, there was internal bleeding, breathing was difficult but all else seemed not to have been injured.

Within a couple hours, the friend called us from our son's room and we were able to visit with our groggy boy.  He was in much pain, on oxygen but lucid. Tubes were draining the internal bleeding.

Son, James, was admitted to a private room in the trauma section of Munson Medical Center where his oxygen level and all else could be closely monitored.

By Sunday morning, his breathing had improved.

Our son is still in the hospital but has been moved out of the trauma unit and is off oxygen.  Tubes continue to drain internal bleeding.

The x-rays and tests all continue to show no damage to spine, back, neck, head, limbs, spleen, kidneys or lungs.  Ribs sustained the force of this accident and are causing considerable pain but we are very grateful to the Lord that other organs were spared injury.

Our son's painful accident has brought additional meaning to the words, "I stood up trembling."  James can now stand and walk a little but it has been difficult.  I can imagine that he is trembling as he does so.

When Jesus asked Daniel to stand up, he obeyed though he may have been experiencing fear.

Daniel 10:10-12

10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11 He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.
Jesus' words to Daniel were, "Do not be afraid."
12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.
I'm not sure what God is saying to my son nor what else he will ask of him.  But I do know some great truth from Daniel's story.
  1. God knows the name of each child and calls them by name.
  2. God hears our words - those words are our prayers.
  3. God speaks to us even when we tremble in fear.
  4. God responds to our prayers.
  5. God does not prevent all things which cause fear.
  6. God notices when a child of his "set(s) your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God"
  7. God does not intend what he asks of us to cause fear.
I, also, take comfort from the words of Jesus to Daniel.  I hear him tell me not to fear - even though I live far away from the hospital where my son is being treated.

Daniel's response and further instruction from the Lord is:

Daniel 10:17-19

17 How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.”
18 Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. 19 “Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed,” he said. “Peace! Be strong now; be strong.”
When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.”
More of God's truth:
  1. God is able to give strength to his children...
  2. The spoken word of God provides strength...
  3. God's word in the face of fear is, "Peace!"
  4. God has special descriptions of his children.  His description of Daniel was "you who are highly esteemed."
  5. We can be strengthened by God's words.
So I pray for James and myself to hear God speak to us even as there may be some fear and weakness as a result of this accident.  Perhaps Daniel heard an audible voice when God spoke.  He did not have God's words so easily accessible to him as we do through the Bible we can easily open and read.

The same is true for me.
God:   “Peace! Be strong now; be strong.”
Me:  “Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.”

Daniel 10: 11b "...I stood up trembling."

In my circle of family and friends, I am presently aware of some who are experiencing potent trials leading them to "tremble."  I am praying fervently for these who are at this point in their lives and I desire to be specific in my intercession for them.  My thoughts and prayer time this morning took me to the book of Daniel and to chapter 10.  I went there to reread verses which have been very helpful and meaningful to me in the past.

I share some scripture and some pondering from this morning...

The book of Daniel is part historical narrative and part apocalyptic (revelatory, prophetic) literature.  For my thoughts and prayer today, I do not focus very deeply on either of these parts but instead give attention to Daniel as a human - a godly man who is highly esteemed.

Trials... James 1: 1 - 8; 12 - 15

James 1:1-8; 12-15

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:  Greetings.

Trials and Temptations

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

A Garden which Proclaims that God Exists...

I let blog posts lapse for much of the past year but this is one I must prepare and post even though it features photos taken from late October through the month of November - 2014.

It was a beautiful fall in the canyon where I work part-time as a hostess at Laity Lodge.  Following the relentless heat and drought of summer, fall unfolded in brilliant color which boasted eloquently and modestly in God's rich and glorious voice of praise.  Dimming sunlight brought forth autumn shades which joined the wealth of greens to provide glorious panoramas that delighted observant eyes and hearts.
Here are some of the photos I took on the 1,900 acre property

Worden's Year 2014

The following letter was created in December but it is just making its debut on this blog today.  I hope to more faithfully update my blog this year.  Perhaps that will happen if I can figure out how to prioritize my time and energy to include this writing opportunity which brings me great joy.  Stay tuned and enjoy a synopsis of life at our home in 2014.

D
ear Family and Friends,                                                       December 2014
...The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
                                                            Isaiah 7: 14b
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.
Matthew 1: 21
For there is no difference between  Jew and Gentile – the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10: 12-13

How grateful we are that God’s greatest Christmas gift of Jesus would be a gift available to all people – Jews and non-Jews.  But gifts must be received in order for them to have personal worth.  Receiving takes place when one believes in Jesus.  The gift is free but cost Jesus his life – love truly amazing & humbling.

Celebrating my Father Who Would Have Been 101 Years Old Today...

James Burton Groves was born on a home- stead near Ryegate, Montana, not far from Billings, MT on October 26, 1913.

His mother, Amanda Sofia Isaacs (originally Isaacson of Norwegian descent) had grown up in Forest City, IA but decided to become a homesteader in MT when she was in her mid twenties.  She met my Grandfather, William Floyd Groves, there as he had gone to MT to work in the harvest.  He had been born and reared on a homestead near North Platte, NE.
Bill & Amanda's wedding photo - November 28, 1910.
Grandma Amanda had traveled to WI for the birth of their first son, Vernon.  But because there were no complications with that birth, she gave birth to my father in MT.  The family would continue to live in MT for the necessary five years in order to own their homestead.  At the end of five years, they sold their land and the one room house in which they had lived.  They moved to Minneapolis, MN for a short period of time and then to a farm near Viroqua, WI.   My father's life continued in WI until 2006 when at the age of 92, he died.

These Three Call Me Mom...

When my husband and I married, I had two more years of undergrad school and he had at least three years of seminary to complete before we would add children to our family.  We agreed to wait five years before having our babies.  And so it was though I longed to be a mother and at times begged my husband to agree to a change in our plans.  He could not be convinced and I knew he was choosing wisely, but still I counted the months until we could have a baby.

John Groves Worden, June 12, 1971
I know that I am very blessed.  Not all women are able to conceive when they want but when the agreed upon time arrived, I became pregnant and our first son was born the day after I turned in my keys and completed my third year as a librarian in a middle school in Racine, WI.  I was thrilled.  He was perfect and the deep desire of my heart was being fulfilled.

James William Worden, September 4, 1973
Our first church was in Loomis, NE and that was where our second son arrived two years after his brother.
Again, I was thrilled.  He, too, was perfect and he was another answer for the deep desire of my heart.

Our second church was in Brooklyn, NY.
Sarah Joy Worden, December 10, 1976
From a town of 320 people in rural NE to a borough of 3.2 million in NYC, we were adjusting to major culture shock and busy toddlers when we learned baby number 3 was on the way.  I was secretly hoping for a girl this time and again, the deep desire of my heart was fulfilled.  The church we served was bilingual - English and Norwegian.  My husband was the English speaking pastor and another man from Norway served the Norwegian congregation.  I have some Norwegian blood in my veins from both my father and mother so relished the opportunity to learn more about my heritage while we lived there.  Some kind ladies of the church loaned costumes to my daughter and me for an annual Syttende Mai (Seventeenth of May) Parade and we took advantage of those bunads for a portrait when Sarah was 18 months old.
